-(으)ㄹ 뿐만 아니라 (not only... but also)

What it means

-(으)ㄹ 뿐만 아니라 means "not only A, but also B". You say one fact, then add another fact on top of it. 뿐 means "only" and 아니라 means "not", so together they mean "not only".

How to make it

• Stem ending in a vowel + ㄹ 뿐만 아니라: 싸다 → 쌀 뿐만 아니라
• Stem ending in a consonant + 을 뿐만 아니라: 많다 → 많을 뿐만 아니라
• Stem ending in ㄹ + 뿐만 아니라 (no extra 을): 멀다 → 멀 뿐만 아니라
• Past: + 았/었을 뿐만 아니라: 오다 → 왔을 뿐만 아니라
• Noun + 뿐만 아니라 (written together): 한국어 → 한국어뿐만 아니라
• Put 도 in the second part to show "also": 맛있을 뿐만 아니라 값도 싸요.

When to use it

• Adding a second good point: 이 식당은 음식이 맛있을 뿐만 아니라 값도 싸요. (This restaurant's food is not only delicious but also cheap.)
• Listing skills with nouns: 그는 영어뿐만 아니라 중국어도 잘해요. (He speaks not only English but also Chinese well.)
• Giving several benefits: 운동은 건강에 좋을 뿐만 아니라 스트레스도 줄여 줘요. (Exercise is good for your health and also reduces stress.)
• Adding a second bad point: 어제는 비가 왔을 뿐만 아니라 바람도 많이 불었어요. (Yesterday it not only rained but was also very windy.)

Compare

• -고 just lists: 싸고 맛있어요 (cheap and tasty). -(으)ㄹ 뿐만 아니라 adds emphasis, "and on top of that": 쌀 뿐만 아니라 맛도 있어요.
• 뿐이다 alone means "only": 하나뿐이에요 (There is only one.). 뿐만 아니라 means "not only".
• -(으)ㄹ뿐더러 has the same meaning but sounds more formal and written.
