Negation 안 / -지 않다

What it means

There are two ways to say "not / don't" with verbs and adjectives. They mean the same thing; they just sound a little different.

How to make it

• Short negation → put 안 before the verb: 가요 → 안 가요, 마셔요 → 안 마셔요
• Long negation → stem + -지 않아요: 가다 → 가지 않아요, 바쁘다 → 바쁘지 않아요
• Past: 안 했어요, 재미있지 않았어요
• Noun + 하다 verbs → 안 goes between the noun and 하다: 운동해요 → 운동 안 해요 (not 안 운동해요)

When to use it

• Everyday speech, 안 is most common: 저는 술을 안 마셔요. = I don't drink alcohol.
• With adjectives: 오늘은 바쁘지 않아요. = I'm not busy today.
• With noun + 하다 in the past: 어제 운동 안 했어요. = I didn't exercise yesterday.
• Writing or a slightly more formal tone, -지 않다: 그 영화는 재미있지 않았어요. = That movie wasn't interesting.

Compare

• 안 vs 못: 안 = "don't / won't" (your choice). 못 or -지 못하다 = "can't" (not able). 안 가요. = I'm not going. 못 가요. = I can't go.
• Verbs vs nouns: for nouns, use 이/가 아니에요, not 안. 학생이 아니에요. = I'm not a student.

Common mistakes

• ❌ 안 공부해요 → ✅ 공부 안 해요 (with noun + 하다, 안 goes right before 하다)
• ❌ 안 학생이에요 → ✅ 학생이 아니에요 (nouns use 이/가 아니에요)
• ❌ 시간이 안 있어요 → ✅ 시간이 없어요 (있다 has its own opposite, 없다)
