Location Particles 에 vs 에서

What it means

Both 에 and 에서 attach to places and can mean "at / in / to", but they do different jobs. 에 = where something is or where you go. 에서 = where you do an action, or where you come from.

How to make it

Both attach directly, with no consonant/vowel change: 학교 → 학교에 / 학교에서, 서울 → 서울에 / 서울에서
에 + movement verbs (가다, 오다, 다니다): 부산 → 부산에 가요
에 + 있다/없다 (exist / not exist): 침대 위 → 침대 위에 있어요
에 + a point in time: 3시 → 3시에, 월요일 → 월요일에
에서 + action verbs (공부하다, 먹다, 일하다): 카페 → 카페에서 일해요
에서 = "from" a starting point: 프놈펜 → 프놈펜에서 왔어요

When to use it

Going somewhere: 내일 부산에 가요. = I'm going to Busan tomorrow.
Something exists there: 고양이가 침대 위에 있어요. = The cat is on the bed.
Doing something there: 저는 카페에서 일해요. = I work at a café.
Where you come from: 프놈펜에서 왔어요. = I came from Phnom Penh.

Compare

도서관에 가요. = I go to the library. vs 도서관에서 공부해요. = I study at the library.
집에 있어요. = I'm at home. vs 집에서 쉬어요. = I rest at home.
서울에 가요. = I go to Seoul. vs 서울에서 왔어요. = I came from Seoul.

Common mistakes

❌ 도서관에 공부해요 → ✅ 도서관에서 공부해요 (studying is an action, so 에서)
❌ 침대 위에서 있어요 → ✅ 침대 위에 있어요 (있다 uses 에)
❌ 월요일에서 만나요 → ✅ 월요일에 만나요 (time always uses 에)

💡 Tip: Ask yourself: is something just there or going there? → 에. Is someone doing something there? → 에서. The extra syllable 서 = extra action.
