Lesson 23TOPIK II
-다 보니 (as I kept doing...)
What it means
-다 보니(까) means "as I kept doing A, B happened (or I realized B)". You do something again and again, or for a long time, and then a new result or discovery appears. It's like "after doing it for a while..." or "before I knew it...".
How to make it
- Action verb stem + 다 보니(까) (no sound change): 살다 → 살다 보니, 듣다 → 듣다 보니, 보다 → 보다 보니
- No tense marker before 다 보니: 보다 → 보다 보니 (not 봤다 보니)
- The second part is a result or realization, often in the past: -았/었어요, -게 되었어요, -아/어졌어요 (건강해졌어요)
- No commands or suggestions after it.
- With adjectives or nouns, it simply gives a reason: 많다 → 일이 많다 보니, 학생이다 → 학생이다 보니
When to use it
- Slow improvement: 한국 드라마를 자주 보다 보니 한국어 실력이 늘었어요. (As I kept watching Korean dramas, my Korean improved.)
- Losing track of time: 이야기를 하다 보니 시간이 이렇게 됐네요. (We kept talking, and look how late it's gotten.)
- A change from a habit: 매일 운동하다 보니 건강해졌어요. (As I exercised every day, I became healthier.)
- A reason (with an adjective): 요즘 일이 많다 보니 친구들을 자주 못 만나요. (Since I have so much work these days, I can't meet my friends often.)
Compare
- -아서 / -니까 give a simple cause: 운동해서 건강해졌어요. (I exercised, so I got healthier.) -다 보니 stresses that the change came little by little, from doing it over and over: 매일 운동하다 보니 건강해졌어요.
- -다 보면 is for the future or general advice: "if you keep doing it, you will...": 매일 운동하다 보면 건강해질 거예요. -다 보니 is for something that has already happened.
Common mistakes
- ❌ 드라마를 한 번 보다 보니 한국어가 늘었어요 → ✅ 드라마를 자주 보다 보니 한국어가 늘었어요 (the action must repeat or continue)
- ❌ 매일 운동하다 보니 건강해지세요 → ✅ 매일 운동하다 보면 건강해질 거예요 (no commands; for the future use -다 보면)
- ❌ 드라마를 봤다 보니 → ✅ 드라마를 보다 보니 (no past marker before 다 보니)
💡 Tip: 보다 means "to look". -다 보니 = "keep doing it, then look up and notice something new". Keep doing → look → "Oh!"
