-는 셈이다 (it amounts to)

What it means

-는 셈이다 means "it practically is", "it amounts to" or "you could say". 셈 means "calculation". You count or think it through, and you decide that something is basically true, even if it's not 100% exact.

How to make it

• Action verb, present + 는 셈이다: 가다 → 거의 안 가는 셈이에요
• Action verb, past + (으)ㄴ 셈이다: 가다 → 간 셈이다, 먹다 → 먹은 셈이다, 끝나다 → 끝난 셈이에요
• Adjective + (으)ㄴ 셈이다 (-ㄴ after a vowel, -은 after a consonant): 싸다 → 싼 셈이다, 많다 → 많은 셈이다
• Noun + 인 셈이다: 고향 → 고향인 셈이에요
• It often comes after a reason with -(으)니까: 한 달에 두 번 가니까 거의 안 가는 셈이에요.

When to use it

• After doing the math: 1+1 행사니까 반값에 산 셈이에요. (It was a buy-one-get-one deal, so I basically bought it at half price.)
• Judging from how often: 한 달에 한 번 운동하니까 거의 안 하는 셈이에요. (I exercise once a month, so it's practically not exercising at all.)
• Saying something is nearly done: 일이 거의 다 끝난 셈이에요. (The work is practically finished.)
• "Practically the same as": 10년 동안 여기 살았으니까 여기가 고향인 셈이에요. (I've lived here for 10 years, so this is practically my hometown.)

Compare

• Plain sentence vs -는 셈이다: 반값에 샀어요 = I bought it at half price (the real price). 반값에 산 셈이에요 = when you calculate, it comes out to half price.
• -(으)ㄴ/는 셈 치다 means "to treat it as if, to just accept it": 속는 셈 치고 한번 믿어 볼게요. (I'll trust you once, even if I end up fooled.)
• -(으)ㄹ 셈이다 is different: it means "to plan to": 어떻게 할 셈이에요? (What are you planning to do?)

Common mistakes

• ❌ 여기가 고향 셈이에요 → ✅ 여기가 고향인 셈이에요 (nouns need 인)
• ❌ 일이 다 끝나는 셈이에요 (for finished work) → ✅ 일이 다 끝난 셈이에요 (finished → past -(으)ㄴ)
